What is WIC... ?

WIC is a federally funded nutrition program for Women (must be pregnant, breastfeeding or less than 6 months postpartum), Infants, and Children up to age 5 years old. In Escambia County WIC services are available at the Health Department on Fairfield Drive, the Molino Health Department, Century Health Department and the Navy Hospital (for military only).

How do I apply ... ?

Call  (850) 595-6670 for hours of service and items you will need to bring for your appointment.

  • Proof of where you live
  • Proof of all income for the household unless you are on Medicaid or receive Food Stamps
  • Identification for everyone applying for WIC in your family

If you are unable to bring all of the above items to your first appointment, we will provide services for 1 month and refer you to one of eligibility specialists for assistance.

What does WIC provide ... ? return to top
  • Nutrition information
  • Healthy foods at no cost to you (milk, cheese, cereal, juice, eggs & baby formula)
  • Breastfeeding information and support including breast pump loans
  • Referrals for health care and other services
What will happen on my first appointment ... ?
  • If you receive Medicaid and/or Food Stamps we will make sure you are current.
  • If you do not receive assistance, we will review the income from your household for the past month.
  • You will be sent to our lab to weighed, measured for height, and we may need to get a drop of blood to measure your hemoglobin level (iron level)
  • One of our nutrition staff will review your information and talk with you about your eating habits.  From this information you will be counseled in ways to improve your nutritional health, provide guidelines for feeding your infant or child, and answer your questions.

Finally, you will be sent to a clerk who will print coupons (like checks) that you can spend at approved grocery stores to purchase foods (milk, cheese, juice, eggs, cereal and baby formula).   Checks are usually provided for 3 months at a time so you only have to come into WIC about 4 times during each year.

How soon can I get an appointment... ? return to top

You will be seen within 10 days. At the main WIC office on Fairfield Drive we have walk-in appointments Monday through Thursday 8:30-1130 am and 12:30-3:30 pm.  Come when it is most convenient for you.

WIC is closed 2 days per month for training, so please call before your first visit to make sure we are providing services that day.

If you are pregnant, we will schedule you for one of our group prenatal classes on Tuesday evening or Friday morning. You will get the WIC checks on the same day. At our Molino, Century and Navy clinics we serve people by APPOINTMENTS ONLY.

How long will my WIC appointment take ... ?

Allow 2 hours for your first visit and any time you or a member of your household is re-certified.  Re-certification happens twice a year.  At other appointments you should be out in 30 minutes.

Will getting WIC affect my food stamps ... ?

No - WIC is provided in addition to Food Stamps and any other government benefits.

How often do I have to come to WIC ... ? return to top

If all the information we need is available at your first visit, most clients can receive 3 months of WIC food checks.  This means you may only have to come in 4 times each year.

How can WIC help me with breastfeeding ... ?

WIC has several staff members who are breastfeeding specialists.  We also have trained breastfeeding peer counselors who are available to work with you while you are breastfeeding. Our staff can answer your questions, help solve any breastfeeding problems and simply provide reassurance that things are going well.  We have electric pumps we can loan (at no charge) to moms who must be separated from their babies.  We can weigh your baby any weekday Monday - Friday (9AM to 4PM) without an appointment.

Does my baby have to go off WIC on the first birthday?

NO!!   Your child can remain on WIC until his/her 5th birthday.  We need to verify household income, where you live,  and identification every six months for your child to remain on WIC.

Where do you go to get WIC foods ... ? return to top

WIC provides vouchers or coupons (we call them checks), that can be used at many area grocery stores.  The checks list the amounts and types of foods that may be purchased.   We will provide a list of stores that accept WIC vouchers during your appointment with us.

How much money can I make and still get WIC ... ?

WIC allows your household to make up to 185% above the poverty level.  The exact amount you may earn is included on the WIC WebPages.  If you, your infant or child are receiving Medicaid or Food Stamps, you are automatically financially eligible.
