Saufley
Field Landfill
The Saufley
Field Construction and Demolition (C&D) Landfill site is located in the Bellview
community of Pensacola. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP)
issued the first permit for operation as a construction and demolition landfill
in 1990. In 2005, the Escambia County Health Department started to receive
health complaints (burning eyes, headache, and nausea, difficulty to breath and
increase in respiratory infections) from residents living and working near the
Saufley Field C&D Landfill. In response, a public health investigation was
initiated with the assistance of the
Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
It was determine that hydrogen sulfide levels, a chemical produced in the
degradation of drywall, were at times elevated in the area surrounding the
landfill. The press release from February 12th 2007 outlines the some
of the investigation findings. More data analysis is currently underway and
conclusions will be made available shortly.
