Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program
(PHBPP)
The
fundamental goal of the
Florida Department of Health's
Perinatal
Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) is to prevent the transmission of
hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection from pregnant women who are hepatitis B
surface-antigen (HBsAg) positive to their newborns at delivery. PHBPP in
Escambia County accomplishes this in the following ways:
-
PHBPP partners with the Escambia County Health Department and private
medical providers to identify and provide follow-up services for pregnant
women who are
HBsAg
positive and their newborn infants
-
PHBPP promotes timely vaccination of infants born to HBsAg
positive women for Hepatitis B; birth 1-2 months and 6 months of age.
-
PHBPP provides free laboratory testing to ensure that infants
born to HBsAg-positive mothers are fully protected from the Hepatitis B
virus.
-
PHBPP offers free Hepatitis B testing and when needed, free
hepatitis B vaccinations household contacts and sexual partners of pregnant
women with hepatitis B
-
Counseling and educational services are offered to pregnant
women with hepatitis B and their families
-
Free Hepatitis B Vaccine (HBV) and Hepatitis B Immune
Globulin (HBIG) are provided to hospitals to prevent the transmission of
hepatitis B from mother to baby
-
Partner notification and client referrals for follow-up care
are made to private providers or local agencies
