Petroleum Cleanup

The Petroleum Cleanup Program is designed to protect the public from risks associated with discharges of petroleum.  This program was initiated through a contractual agreement with the Department of Environmental Protection.  Sites included in the assessment are those determined eligible for state funded cleanup, as well as, voluntary cleanup funded by land owners.  Our division works in conjunction with DEP to assure that Petroleum Site Cleanup Crews eliminate the contamination in accordance with the State Cleanup Target Levels. Our division covers the following counties: Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa.

When released into the environment, petroleum and petroleum products can contaminate:

  • Air
  • Groundwater
  • Surface water
  • Soil

The extent of contamination is determined by many environmental factors such as:

  • Volatilization (release into air)
  • Groundwater flow rate and pathways through zones in groundwater table
  • Biodegradation (microbes may break down contaminant and use as a food source)

The governing authority for this program is:  Florida Administrative Code.

For further information on this program you may call us at 850-595-6705.
